Ultimate Starts May 10th & 12th 2011

Somewhere between this blog and Facebook and good old fashioned word of mouth help spread the word on getting Ultimate off to a solid start next week. Beyond USA Ultimate membership, collecting fees for non-members and issues of liability, the key element is getting people out to play and letting spirit reign. There is a small group of people who know what to do regarding the necessary components of organization and satisfying the powers that be. Know that they are safeguarding our beautiful fields in the lush green valley of SIT and protecting all interests. Be prepared to play your small role of filling out some paperwork and $.

Getting good numbers next week and processing fees and paperwork quickly is huge - hopefully an extended wait, some good weather and knowing the disc will be in the air soon gets us the lasting results that equate to disc from May to October, in a sweet location, for a very meager fee.

So, nice turn out last week mostly due to an influx of new blood from the ranks from the SIT student body. Light is fading fast and "under the lights" is a question mark at this point so might as well head out and get the little bit that is left out of this season. At this time of year it helps if people reply if they are planning on coming....or not.

Hey folks. With the waning days and numbers we are going to one day of ulti per week - Tuesday - and an earlier start - 6pm. It would be great to hear who is coming and planning to come as well. we cannot get under the lights for another three weeks at least. This give us a chance to finish strong.

So school is back upon us taking with all the young blood that has kept us going all summer long and it is once again time to think about moving under the lights. We a trying to get a sense of who is interested and willing to put their money where their mouth is. We need at least 10 people willing to put up $30 each to make it work and then we can start the process of dealing with the UPA and the town. Send me an email at jfolson64@gmail.com if you are interested in playing so we can get a sense of numbers. If you have friends in other places who might not get this forward it to them so we can get the word out in Keene and down south.

Playing under the lights is a beautiful thing and we would love to start in a couple weeks and run through Oct.

so i was standing in line at Hanaford the other day and couldn't help but overhear the conversation in the check out line next to mine. not sure who these people were but ultimate had obviously crept into their living room.

they were talking about how in Brattleboro the older disc players are so good that they could probably put together a squad that was twice as old as the team they were playing and win. now they had talked about the veterans spotting a few points but...and we would need a few folsk to get a sitter but....

It is a pay to play world folks. We need to pay SIT or risk losing flat space in a really bumpy region. $25 per person pays for April through September. Best deal in town. Jim O and Eric are collecting. We have some cash in the bank but need to keep a positive flow for under the lights end of September. I am not sure we have the numbers for a formal league but time will tell if we do registration is going to happen right here on the blog. There are a few other things we can do for more exciting play and shit talking but $ first...

This post is going up for Jeff & Harrison and the crew heading up North to bring home the trophy. Expect to win fellas and it just happens. It was really great to see so many young players out Tuesday and equally exciting to see how good all of you are getting. We need to send this squad off to Vermont State Championships with some encouraging words and chatter.

First off, the team's organizers have been true to the sport the way many new teams and young players are not. Ultimate has always been self-organizing, a sport run by the players who play. To see a group of young people gather the reins and do it themselves reminds me why I gravitated away from playing soccer, basketball and baseball in college towards ultimate where there were no coaches and all the other hierarchy and bull shit that came from playing traditional varsity sports. I don't think it is a coincidence that young people in the Brattleboro area know how to come correct. There's a long tradition of ultimate in southern Vermont that has always covered the gambit. Not too many areas maintain the openness and spirit of the pick-up environment. At the same time, many top levels players have passed through Brattleboro to hone their game, join in the spirit or roll with Moo Jah. But whether you are in Appleton, Sarasota, Vancouver, Blaine or Madison, small market Brattleboro disc is always in the house. Pick up the UPA magazine, go to the USA ultimate website or the like and there's always a local face in the ultimate media or print. Not to mention the first ever state championships was won by Compass. You got next fellas. There may be a certain fun loving approach we take when we play local, but when we take it on the road it is time to represent. By now this team knows what its flow is, make sure you think about what it takes to get there and stay there. Enjoy every moment and remember to play every point like it is a state championship so when it comes time to close it out, it feels like you are just hustling back to the line as someone is shouting "last back".

Good luck fellas ~ you are the new face of Brattleboro ultimate and we welcome your arrival - now go get yours!

Game on in General May 25th

Well, I guess if you think you have game...then you now have a place to talk. But it's all about what happens on the field and 85 and sunny is the perfect conditions for that. While the old timers of "Rumble Strip" broke seed and climbed from their annual no-glam role as the 15th seed and settled for a 6th place finish at WMO (despite the significant opportunity to perform better), there is really no telling how long these forty year old spare tire warriors will continue to kick the asses of youngsters attempting to stake their claim on ultimate throughout the northeast and for the lucky few beyond. My two year old Callan and three week old Holden attended WMO this year, and after playing some of the teams we informed them that when you are our age...they will be your age and of course they were too young and inexperienced to really get it.

So come correct and play hard pretenders and get yours,

Nice night for some air, dirt and grass. Rumor has it Robin Johnson is even going to make his illustrious return to the ultimate field...come find out for yourself.

Compass Ultimate Needs a Hand

The Compass School ultimate team needs a volunteer substitute coach
for the Vermont State Championship on Saturday May 29th.
Unfortunately, I have another commitment that day. Duties include helping captains with substitutions, and giving guidance/ inspiration
during games. You don't need to be a great player--(hey, I do it)
you just need to be good with kids and know the basics--although if you are a great player, that would be great too. The tournament is going to be held at St. Johnsbury Academy and runs all day. This means you would leave at about 6:30 in the morning and get home
probably around 8:00. Please pass this along to anybody who you

The fields are improving from last week. I checked them this evening and they are more playable than they have been but in need of some work. There's not as much standing water and we could set up a field in our usual spot with the usual bad spots. It would be better than it has been and after a day of sun a warmth close to good enough. Not sure if moving the operation to Fort Dummer is worth it considering the worst is probably behind us.

Unfortunately, our fields are not draining. Tuesday was messy - today is going to be worse. Perhaps we can angle a field that does not bring into play too many puddles and more importantly give overused areas a rest. If it ends up being silly and it continues to rain, then we will need to relocate for a week. Make sure to check the Blog. The best location, with baseball season over and high school soccer still a few weeks away, is Fort Dummer Park off South Main in Brattleboro. For tonight it is SIT but beware in the future we may makes some changes. All changes will be posted on the Blog.

I cannot make it tonight. If there is lightning, get off the fields and to your car. There may be considerable field damage if soccer played lasy night. In these types of conditions, it is important to "replace your pivots" at the end of the night as those divots dry up and stay with us for the rest of the season which end up have considerable impact on the field, our ankles, knees etc.

Summer Travel Tournaments

Brattleboro ulimate players often scatter about the northeast and beyond during the summer and fall months picking up with a variety of different traveling squads. It's been a few seasons since we heard the cow Moo, but hey, that is what makes ultimate ultimate - there's a lot of different directions you can take this game. Perhaps the most fun is taking the show on the road.

As part of the Brattleboro Ultimate Blog, we need a forum that helps makes this happen. So, post here with news, follow the string and email when it gets to that point.

Recent tourney updates:

Kyle has a bid at Wildwood
Owe My Knee is now July 18th & 19th - I had talked about getting a squad for this but that was when it was scheduled for 8/1 & 2 - so i am out. Owe is looking for co-ed squads - act now!
White Mountain Coed is 8/7 & 8. I put in for a bid and await confirmation.

With that said, there's a whole lot of other stuff that goes into more formal team play and everyone comes with a different expectation.

Now, with 45 people signed up to play summer league, and a blog to share info, hopefully folks have more opportunity to go get their's and ramp it up a bit...

Summer League Action

Week two action on and off the field was both heroic and life affirming. The weather forecast suggested rain but through heckling and name calling ultimate players in Brattleboro took the field despite the gray clouds. An incredible 18 blogs post were made prior to play and once cleats were laced up the action picked up in more ways than one. Teams combined again to form two teams playing one game to 17. The final score of 17-16 was indicative of the kind of play that left the competive natured pissed off at loosing and the more spirited content with tired legs and a stimulating level of excitement. Nevetheless, the Brattleboro Summer League accepts and welcomes all those who come out to play and on a week to week basis is committed to making it happen on the field, off the field and in cyberspace. Let the commentary begin as we enter our third week of formal league play - with sun in the immediate forecast we hope to be nourished by mother nature this week.

I checked the fields this afternoon and they are still very water logged and borderline playable. We are going to let them drain and let the grass grow for tonight. In the future, check the blog on bad weather. Most of the issue is drainage and field damage.

Lightning and weather

Plan on playing through the rain, below is our policy for stoppage of play. In that valley, sometimes it is hard to see what weather is rolling in which is dangerous. Lets be careful.

It will be tough to register folks in the rain.

On days like this, it would be great if folks start hitting the blog for info and to let others know whether you are coming. See you out there. With the wind forecasted, the instructional component of today's play will be zone o & zone d.

Organization & updates...

...are a work in progress.

First, a group of players got together this year fromally in order to promote ultimate in the Brattleboro area. This is new and refreshing.

Those people are - Barb Knudson, Alyssa Blum, Eric Coffman, Steve Dybas, Jim Olson, Winthrop Pennock, Drew McDowell, Steve Dybas, Paul Paytas & Bruce Whitney.

Our goal, first and foremost, was to secure a place to play, pay for it and have liability. In this area we have had success. SIT is one of the best spots in Brattleboro for field space and getting field space isn't easy in this town.

Second, our goal is to promote ultimate with a local instructional league - this is a work in progress. We made posters!

In order to have more time to get people out playing, we have extended the time before the league starts until June 4th. But it is never too late to come and join us - we have the fields until October.

On Thursdays in May, we are committed to registering folks to play and helping folks learn the game we all love with clinics, skills & drills and learning scrimmages.

Ultimate has been played in Brattleboro for 25 years. We have had leagues as large as 60 players. Club teams form out of summer play, organize & travel to regional tournaments. Locals players play for teams out of Boston and New York.

There's something in it for everybody from the mellow Mondays crowd of years past to the college and high school player wanting a place to play for the summer.

Summer Instructional Ultimate Frisbee League Registration

This summer the Brattleboro Ultimate community is committed to providing a four team instructional summer league. The league is Co-ed and open to players 14 & up. To make this happen, we have to pay a field fee to The School for International Training and a player registration fee to the Ultimate Players Association for insurance - http://www.upa.org/.

Everyone is encourgaed to play pick-up games on Tuesdays & Thursdays on the dates leading up to the May 14th start date. If you can't make it every week that is OK. On your regsitration sheet we will ask for the dates you will be away and make teams accordingly for numbers.

UPA members - $15 check paid to "Brattleboro Ultimate" - have your UPA # at registration
Non-UPA members - $25 check paid to "Brattleboro Ultimate"

League Dates & Regsitration implications

The leagues runs every Thrusday from May 14th to July 2nd
Four teams will play eachother twice, then semis, a final & consolation
Everyone registered is also covered for joining pick-up games that continue through October on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
If we run another League in September, everyone who registers now is covered.
It's a great deal for anyone looking for excercize and wanting to play disc.

Instructional Clinics, Women's Clinic & Ultimate information

On Tuesday, May 5th from 5:30pm to 6:45pm - The Brattleboro Ultimate community will sponsor a clinic for all players that go over rules of the game, basic throws and strategy. After the clinic and registration, fields will be set up for pick-up games.

Spring pick-up begins April 21!

Pick-up games in Brattleboro are played on Tuesdays & Thursdays 6:00pmish, from April to October. Our goal is to create an environment where new players can learn the game, long time friends can get together for some summer fun and regional club players can play in good spirit. In May, June & July, the summer instructional league happens on Thursdays.

The first days for pick-up games are Tuesday, April 21st & Thursday, April 23rd. Pick-up will be played on April 28th & 30th, May 5th, 7th & May 12th. League starts May 14th and ends July 2nd.
